NEW Water will receive grant funding from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program to support educational outreach initiatives to increase awareness about Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced the grants for coastal communities to “support quality of life, foster economic development, protect and improve the Great Lakes resources, and create resiliency in Wisconsin’s coastal communities.”
HABs are an overgrowth of algae or cyanobacteria that can produce toxins harmful to both humans and animals. These blooms often occur in warm, nutrient-rich waters and can significantly impact water quality. Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, is a type of harmful algae found in the Bay of Green Bay and other bodies of water.
Exposure to blue-green algae can cause a range of health problems and is particularly dangerous for young children, pets, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

To minimize your risk of exposure, avoid swimming or coming into contact with water that appears discolored or has a greenish scum.
