Welcome to Northeast Wisconsin, where we take football, community, and clean water seriously! Just like a strong defense is key on the field, keeping our water clean starts with smart flushing habits. Whether you're at home, in the stadium, out to eat, or tailgating, following the right flushing habits helps protect our environment and keeps sewer systems clear.
Flushing may seem simple, but only the MVPs belong in the toilet: Poop, Pee & Toilet Paper. The 3Ps break down properly, keeping sewer systems clear, preventing blockages, and helping protect public health and the environment. Keep it simple – only the 3Ps go in!
Toilets aren’t trashcans! Flushing the wrong things can clog pipes, damage pumps, and harm the environment. Here’s a list of a couple of items that should never be flushed:
Wipes (even “flushable” ones) – These don’t break down like toilet paper and can clog your pipes.
Sanitary products – Tampons and pads expand when wet, leading to blockages.
Diapers – These don’t break down in water and can completely block plumbing.
Needles or medications – These can contaminate water sources and pose serious public health risks.
Fats, oils, or grease – These can harden, creating sewer blockages.
Trash of any kind – Cigarette butts, cans, wrappers and other garbage belong in a trash can, not the toilet.

Improper flushing doesn’t just create frustrating backups, it can have serious consequences for both the environment and your wallet. When unflushables items end up in the wastewater system, they can:
Fixing clogged pipes and repairing wastewater systems is expensive. Every year, cities spend millions of dollars dealing with blockages caused by improper flushing. These costs often get passed down to ratepayers. So, remember: Don’t treat your toilet like a trashcan.
Whether you’re tailgating before the big game or attending an event, portable restrooms (Formerly known as Porta-Potties) are an essential part of the experience. Just like toilets at home, portable toilets are not trashcans!
Here’s how you can help keep them clean and functioning :
When everyone follows proper toilet etiquette, the facilities are kept cleaner, and everyone benefits.
Flushing the right way is a simple but powerful way to protect Northeast Wisconsin’s waterways. By sticking to the 3Ps, using trash cans for unflushable items, and keeping portable toilets clean, we can all keep our community and environment healthy.
